Apple is working on their own version of Google Glass, as the company is reportedly venturing into the realms of augmented reality. As Google Glass takes a break after a rather unsuccessful Explorer Edition adoption, Apple is getting ahead in the business with their own Glass. According to Gene Munster, an analyst at Piper Jaffray, Apple has already begun recruiting members for a team that will specialize in augmented reality, aka the Apple Glass.
Apple Glass is in no way the name of the alleged augmented reality device the Cupertino-company is working on, but it seems like an appropriate placeholder until we find out more about this alleged adventure Tim Cook is embarking on. Since the report about Apple Glass is coming from an analyst who cites sources from within the company, take this whole report with a grain of salt until Tim Cook or other company execs come clean about what they’re working on.
This is not the first time we’re hearing about Apple getting into the augmented reality business, as various rumors from last year suggested that the company had filed numerous patents that could be applied to this technology. Nonetheless, this is the first time an analyst which has proven himself rather knowledgeable about Apple affairs speaks openly about the alleged device.
According to Gene Munster, we cannot predict what kind of device the Apple Glass will be, as it can take the shape of glasses, a headset, a projector, a smartphone feature or app and many more. He did emphasize the fact that if Apple were to create such a thing, it would definitely be more fashionable than current augmented reality devices such as Google Glass, Microsoft HoloLens, Epson Moverio and more. Even if Apple wants to be a fashion mogul in tech, the Apple Watch launch doesn’t really help the company out in my opinion, since they managed to release a device that looks the same as most of the smart watches out there.
If Tim Cook and co. are truly thinking about Apple Glass and augmented reality, they’re going to have to do better than a golden frame for the thing if they want to make it really fashionable. Although I don’t agree with people saying that tech should be fashionable, I’m aware of the bad rep Google Glass made for itself with their design. To be honest, I actually liked the way in which the team designed the glasses and don’t understand the upheaval it caused. People thought it was obtrusive, obnoxious and even scary, traits which I’m failing to see.
Regardless of my opinion, if Apple is working on Apple Glass and augmented reality, it is only proof that the field is getting more and more attention as technology for producing life-like images by using displays and glasses is advancing. The most impressive concept, in my opinion, is Microsoft’s HoloLens, but since it’s still just a concept device that hasn’t been fully developed yet, I’m curious to see the end result.
According to the analyst, the Apple Glass or whatever it’s going to be called, won’t be released or unveiled in the next few years, as he thinks that 10 years are needed until augmented reality can be used as a consumer product. We should find out whether these predictions are accurate or not soon enough, if Apple decides to come forth about its newer projects. Since the company tends to be very secretive about its endeavors, we don’t have high hopes and you shouldn’t either. But it would be fun to see some Apple Glass concepts arising in the next few weeks, wouldn’t it?
