Welcome back to my fun little list of comic based TV shows that you should give a watch. These aren’t necessarily my favourites, just ones that I would recommend if you’re a fan of comic books and their adaptations.

Part 9: Spawn
Animation is probably the only medium in which you can do Spawn justice. It’s such a ridiculous (but awesome) design that any attempt to make it in live action is most likely doomed to fail, and indeed it has. Not only do we live in a world in which Spawn got a live action film before Spider-Man (figure that one out, I can’t either) but we also unfortunately live in a world where some things are simply two awesome on paper to put to film. The simple answer: keep it on paper.
The 1997 show Todd McFarlane’s Spawn stars Keith David (incidentally one of my favourite actors) in by far the best portrayal of Spawn I have ever seen. Keith David simply is the voice of Spawn and I truly believe that if another live action movie were to ever occur Keith David should remain the voice of Spawn. The show is grim and gritty and the animation is immaculate and it is very much Spawn.
This show is unrivalled in terms of dark atmosphere and tension and is 110% worth a watch. This is one of only two shows on my list in no way affiliated with Marvel or DC. I can whole heartedly recommend it.
A successor series with Keith David reprising his role has been talked about for years now but despite Todd McFarlane’s insistence that it is coming I am unfortunately doubtful. So rather than waiting I suggest you watch this now with its dark and morbidly funny cast featuring the most charismatic main protagonist on this list.
