Nintendo’s First Mobile Game Will Be Out This Year

Nintendo will release its first mobile game by the end of this year, according to DeNA West CEO Shintaro Asako. Nintendo is partnering with DeNA to release mobile games based on its existing IPs. Shintaro also said that Nintendo plans to release five mobile games in total by March 2017, the first of which we will see by the end of 2015.

Speaking at Pocket Gamer Connects in San Francisco, Asako explained the plans for DeNA’s partnership with Nintendo. “I understand some people like RPGs, casual games. That’s why we decided to work together to create five games, hitting on different genre-utilizing IPs.” So their idea is to create five different games, each of which will cater to a different type of gamer. “We want to make sure out of those five IP that we can end up attracting hundreds of millions of people.”

Asako called DeNA’s deal with Nintendo the “most crucial partnership” the company as ever entered. Coming from a company that has partnerships with Disney and Marvel, that says quite a lot. He also acknowledged the public’s high expectations. Given Nintendo’s reputation for high-quality casual games and DeNA’s weight of experience in the mobile space, he says it will be a challenge to meet people’s expectations.

A few days ago, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata addressed concerns about how the company intends to monetise its mobile games at a shareholder meeting. Iwata said that Nintendo’s games will be labelled “free-to-start” rather than free-to-play, and heavily indicated that the games will contain microtransactions. But he also emphasised the desire to avoid the “notorious” business model that surrounds freemium mobile games. How the company will strike that balance remains to be seen.

As for how Nintendo’s partnership with DeNA will work, Asako pointed to Glu’s Kim Kardashian game (yes, there’s a Kim Kardashian game) as an example of a similar sort of brand partnership. Like the Kim Kardashian game (ugh, just saying it makes this whole thing hard to take seriously), Nintendo’s well-established brand will enter the mobile space with the help of a mobile gaming heavyweight.

Bend is looking for a lead project manager who can effectively manage project scope based on current team velocities and milestone schedules. The role requires hands-on game development experience in leadership roles, specifically in shipping AAA live-service games. Specifically, the ideal candidate should possess a proven ability to transform game development studios from a traditional focus on boxed products to dynamic live service development, all while holding a key leadership position.

It’s worth noting that while a service game out of Bend has the potential to be great, it’s important to acknowledge the numerous failed attempts in recent history. Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve reported on a cancelled Spider-Man game, rumors of an online Twisted Metal project, and a fantasy co-op game that got axed when London Studio shut down. And mind you, that’s just scratching the surface of what Sony has been up to. Choosing to take a chance with a studio that specializes in single-player games seems questionable, to say the least.
