Fallout 4 is a true classic among fans of the Fallout franchise. While it may have some faults, most will agree that the game has led to some of the most impressive gameplay in the series thus far, and the modding communities of the world have only added to this experience. Here are five essential mods for Fallout 4 that drastically improve the sense of enjoyment while playing the game.
1. Full Dialogue Interface
There’s no doubt that Full Dialogue Interface, by Cirosan, is already one of the most popular mods among Fallout 4 players. The mod takes the very vague dialogue options from the base game and replace the options with the full lines spoken by the player character. In previous titles, the player character did not speak audibly, and dialogue was achieved with selections from a list. This mod goes back to this style of gameplay, and actually allows you to see what your character is going to say. There’s few things worse than saying something you didn’t want to say, and this mod offers a handy fix.
2. Lasers Have No Recoil
Lasers Have No Recoil, by SephDragoon, fixes a scientific inaccuracy from the Fallout franchise- Lasers simply have no recoil. Conventional firearms do because of the nature of their ammunition, where an explosion propels a projectile. Newton’s Third Law of motion states that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. When the bullet is fired, the same force that fired the bullet pushes back into your body. However, lasers propel no projectile- the harmful part of the laser is the energy being emitted at the target. Instead, lasers expel excess energy as heat. A video by Shoddycast, which is actually the inspiration for this enjoyment-enhancing mod, explains the principles better.
Science aside, this mod helps the feel of energy weapons in the game, and makes them a much more appealing option over firearms.
This simple tweak, by Amstrad, makes one simple change to the game. Pre-war safes no longer contain pipe weapons! It was always strange to come across a safe that had been locked for over two hundred years and find a homemade pistol or rifle inside. If there’s no nuclear war, why make your own gun? This mod replaces instances of pipe weapons in safes marked as “pre-war” by Fallout 4 with actual timeline-appropriate weapons. Safes used by actual wasteland residents, however, can still spawn with these weapons.
4. Craftable Armor Size
Dislaimer: Craftable Armor Size, by John Doe Bowler, will NOT re-grow your character’s hair, nor alter their facial hair. What it does do, however, is allow the player to craft the varying armor sizes found in the game. Armor and weapon modifications are an important part of Fallout 4, and as the player’s level increases, upgraded versions of armor pieces can be looted. This mod brings these upgrades to the crafting mechanics, and can help augment the player’s armor-crafting capabilities.
5. Legacy SPECIAL
While there are many mods out there that modify the SPECIAL stats the player character has, this mod is a good choice for those players that are loyal to earlier versions of the game. Fallout 4 only gives the player 28 SPECIAL points to distribute, where previous titles offered 40. This mod brings the total once more to 40, and can be edited to the player’s liking.
