Developers Ustwo Games surprised everyone at the annual Worldwide Developers Conference this morning with the surprise release of Monument Valley 2. Presented during the iOS 11 presentation, a spokesperson for Apple revealed that the game is available for download in the App Store right now!
Monument Valley 2 will once again place you inside a beautiful, labyrinthine world, inspired by the paintings of MC Escher. Be prepared to once again take on a myriad of mind boggling puzzles as you manipulate the landscape, via the touchscreen, to create a pathway to each level’s exit. This time however, you’re playing as two different characters simultaneously; a mother and her child. There is a larger focus on storytelling and it’s supposedly much larger than the original Monument Valley.
The original Monument Valley was first released back in 2014 and garnered a lot of attention for its beautiful aesthetics and clever, imaginative game play. It even managed to make a surprise appearance in the hit series House of Cards, as the villainous politician Frank Underwood was shown enjoying the game on his iPad. The game went on to be nominated for numerous awards back in 2014-2015 and even won the BAFTA video game awards for best “British Game” and “Mobile/Handheld Game”, including Apple’s Game of the Year award. Although developers Ustwo Games had originally spoken against doing a sequel, the team doubled in size over the last few years, adding many admirers of the first game to the team, bringing with them new ideas for a sequel.
Monument Valley is available now for $4.99 (or £4.99) on the iOS app store for iPhones and iPads alike. There is no news yet on whether it will be available on Android.
If you’ve never played these games before I strongly recommend you go check them out right now. They’re a delight.
