Wingnut AR Does Peter Jackson Proud with Impressive First Demo

Peter Jackson’s new augmented reality production company, Wingnut AR, demonstrated their brand new Science Fiction AR game at Apple’s Worldwide Development Conference.

The demonstration takes place on a table upon the stage, where three iPads and two iPhones are placed. A Wingnut AR developer holds up an iPad screen and the table springs to life, as Creative Director Alasdair Coull explains that everything is rendered in real time, using Unreal Engine 4.

A map literally unfolds on the table top, showing a trading outpost on a desolate world where people come to trade and get repairs. Inhabitants wander out of their houses and across the table.  A spaceship arrives, hovering above the table and lands in the square as people exit and start unloading the cargo. The sound of spaceships can be heard as raiders attack the settlement, swooping down and unleashing a volley of lasers. Chaos ensues as the inhabitants panic and run for safety. There’s even an impressive moment where one of the characters  runs across the table and plunges over the edge, disappearing into darkness, as Alasdair comments: “I guess that takes care of that guy.” Spaceships fly around the room, shooting at each other and exploding into flames. The fight ends with a raider spaceship crashing into a building, strewing rubble and dust across the tabletop.

While it’s not exactly clear how the game-play works, Alasdair does at one point explain that you can be like the director of a film, which is promptly demonstrated by his colleague bringing the iPad closer, effectively zooming in on the scene, like a cameraman.

The only hint given about its release is later this year on the App Store.

It’s an impressive looking demo and worth checking out. This will be one to look out for.

Video games have been a passion of mine from the very first time I played one, at the age of five on Amstrad!( Never heard of it? It was an 80s thing) From then on, I developed a great love for video games and have always owned some form of console throughout each generation of gaming, from the NES to the PS4. Call me a casual if you like, I was probably gaming before you were even born, kiddo.

On October 25, 2023, THQ Nordic’s Alone in the Dark reboot will star Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer and Stranger Things’ David Harbour. Comer will play Emily Hartwood, while Harbour will play Edward Carnaby.

The demo, loosely based on the 1992 original, is available for download from the PS Store. This prologue, starring supporting character Grace Saunders, is inspired by Alone in the Dark 2’s Jack in the Dark demo and allows you to explore the Derceto Mansion.

The showcase didn’t focus on combat, but previous showings have shown a frantic over-the-shoulder shooter, and developer Pieces Interactive promises a variety of puzzles. Depending on how much guidance you want, you can adjust the difficulty.

We’re excited about the final product. Alone in the Dark hasn’t been respected in recent years, despite its huge influence. A compelling reboot that updates the 1992 classic looks to put the franchise back on track.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin, a new real-time strategy game where players command one of four warring factions, is coming to PS5 in the grimdark future.

PlayStation’s strategy gaming renaissance makes us feel like we’re living in the best possible time for console gamers who love command. Realms of Ruin could be a cool addition if it succeeds. As fans know, Warhammer games are unfortunately inconsistent in quality, so we’ll reserve judgment until we see some gameplay.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin: your thoughts? What do you think of Age of Sigmar’s controversial rebranding in general?

According to Metacritic, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is the worst-rated game of 2023, setting a new low for AAA releases. OpenCritic’s story is similar. See our video or written review to understand why.

Only eFootball was more universally hated. Balan Wonderworld and Babylon’s Fall are other villains in that awful rogue’s gallery.
