E3 2018 is officially over, with all of the big publishers showing off the games that they have waiting on the horizon. Of course, once the dust settles, everyone begins arguing about who it was that “won” the conference this year. Well, if we’re going by media coverage, it was Sony.
This report comes from the analysts at ICO Partners, who kept track of all of the articles written about E3 this year. They came to the conclusion that Sony received 16,226 articles, Microsoft received 15,416 articles and Nintendo received 10,114. This makes it a relatively slim margin between Sony and Microsoft, with a similar result happening last year, but with the companies flipped.
E3 coverage was down compared to the previous year, with this year’s 25,900 articles falling short of last year’s 27,398 articles. Lack of hardware announcements and the fact that there simply weren’t as many big games announced this time around as in previous years are the main culprits.
When it comes to software, Fortnite continues its gaming dominance by even taking the E3 2018 media coverage crown. The game managed to beat out the likes of Fallout 76 and Cyberpunk 2077, which both received over 2,000 articles.
Now looking at publishers, EA got the most media coverage easily with 6,646 articles published. The runner up was Bethesda with 5,379 articles, with Ubisoft following closely behind with 5,242. EA always gets a lot of press each year, though it unfortunately isn’t usually the positive kind.
E3 2018 definitely wasn’t anywhere near the best one we’ve seen, but it still brought some big announcements that we’re looking forward to. We’ll bring you more news on those games when it becomes available.
