The long-awaited Kingdom Hearts 3 is finally set to launch later this month, coming to both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. However, considering the popularity of the Switch, there are many Switch owners who are wondering if the RPG will ever make its way to Nintendo’s new console. While it’s a long shot, the possibilities of a Switch version actually aren’t completely out of the question.
Kingdom Hearts 3 director Tetsuya Nomura has spoken on this topic in the past, though he really didn’t confirm or deny that it would happen. He said the following in an interview with IGN:
“The Nintendo Switch is definitely a very interesting piece of hardware, but if we lightly say, ‘Oh yeah, we’ll be on the Nintendo Switch,’ I’m sure people will come back and say, ‘But what about the PS4 and Xbox One?”
“We want them out first. Don’t focus on other platforms. So for now, we want to focus on what platforms we’ve already announced we’re going to be releasing Kingdom Hearts 3 on. And so after, perhaps, maybe we can start thinking about other possibilities.”
It will be truly impressive if they manage to somehow get this game on Switch, considering how big and graphically demanding it is. A more likely scenario would be some kind of abridged version of the game coming to the platform. This is what happened with Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 15, as the full version was simply too demanding to run on the platform. Instead, Switch and mobile gamers got the Pocket Edition of the game, which reduced the visuals and streamlined the experience overall.
Still, it’s too early to give up hope for Switch owners. Once the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game release later this month there will be more breathing room for discussing other potential platforms.
Kingdom Hearts 3 launches for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on January 29th. Despite the game being delayed multiple times, the game finally went gold late last year.
