Blizzard Reveals Doomfist in Animated Short

Blizzard Reveals Doomfist in Animated Short

July 6, 2017

Rise up and be remembered. After a full year of speculation, Doomfist is finally coming to Overwatch. In an animated short, Blizzard revealed “the Successor” Akande Ogundimu. We’ve known for a while that Winston defeated Doomfist in battle, but the two minute short gave us a lot more information on the now-escaped prisoner.

Role in the Lore

Doomfist is a Talon leader– giving the Reaper voice line “Doomfist should do his own dirty work” so much more meaning.

Much to the chagrin of fans everywhere, Doomfist is not voiced by Terry Crews. Though it looks like Ogundimu can dish out his fair share of power, Crews won’t be delivering it from the voice booth.

This short was in American-Anime style, a departure from the usual 3D animation the shorts have used. Although, character reveals and backstories tend to be hand-drawn, so expect the anticipated D.Va and Zarya shorts to be back in 3D.

What Happened?

Moving to the short itself, we see Doomfist fighting Overwatch heroes in the streets of Numbani. The Dive-Comp of Tracer, Genji, and Winston is holding their own until Doomfist catches Tracer and rips out her Chronal Accelerator.

Tracer goes down.

Tracer goes down.

Upon seeing this, Winston enters a primal rage and their fists collide as Doomfist remembers the scene and breaks himself out of jail. He walks past the “New Doomfist Exhibit” advertisement in the newspaper on his wall. He’s apparently ready to bring us back to late last year, when he steals the gauntlet back after making short work of the OR-15s. So, lore-wise, the present-day part of the short takes place a little before Orisa joins the world of Overwatch.

Doomfist is back!

Doomfist is back!

Doomfist is now playable on the PTR! Check out the animated short here and the developer update here! Hopefully, he’ll officially release in the next two weeks or so.

I play a lot of video games and watch a lot of cartoons. I'm probably complaining about Overwatch.
