A team of researchers from Washington University School of Madison in St. Louis have previously worked on a diet full of nitrates for athletes, to improve their muscle performance. They’ve discovered the importance of nitrates during exercise and how beneficial they are on blood pressure and cardiovascular health. Nitrates are converted into nitric oxide which is the active substance that affects the cardiovascular system, that is probably why it increases during exercise because we bring more oxygen to the body. The vegetables that have a lot of nitrates are: beetroot, spinach, arugula and celery.

They’ve decided to make a research about how nitrates can improve the heart muscle and help patients with heart failure. They’ve worked with a group of 9 cardiovascular patients and made them a diet based on beet juice. Some of the patients received beet juice without the nitrate content, they were the placebo group. Nobody knew who was taking the nitrate rich beet juice and who was taking the placebo, so they could really see if there is any difference . The result showed that patients who consumed nitrates had a 13% increase in muscle power. Patients with heart failure have a weakened heart which causes them fatigue and shortness of breath. A diet based on nitrates, or drinking beet juice everyday impacts their quality of life making their everyday activity a lot easier.

Based on their finding they want to continue studying if nitrates could be beneficial to old people. The biggest problem while aging is that the muscles get weaker and increased intake of nitrates might improve the aging process by making muscles stronger.

As I am a bit of a self confessed tech geek I think there is no better way to discover these stories than by reading every day some articles or the newspaper . The number of global hepatitis deaths is increasing, posing a threat to the goal of eliminating the disease

According to a recent report by the World Health Organization (WHO), the incidence of viral hepatitis-related mortality is rising globally. What is viral hepatitis?

Dr. Michael Hufford, co-founder and CEO of LyGenesis, said that we have successfully administered the first dose of a clinical trial to a patient using their own lymph nodes as living bioreactors to regenerate an ectopic organ. This is a groundbreaking achievement in the field of medicine.

The treatment involves extracting hepatocytes, the primary functional cells of a donated liver, and administering them via injection into the lymph nodes. These lymph nodes, which act as filters for foreign particles, such as infection-causing viruses, play a crucial role in supporting the immune system.

After entering the lymph nodes, the liver cells will undergo growth and division, establishing connections with the circulatory system through the development of blood vessels. “Over time, the lymph node will gradually vanish, leaving behind a small-scale organ,” explained Hufford to New Scientist.

This method has previously demonstrated success with certain animals. Scientists conducted an experiment on pigs by surgically modifying their livers to replicate human liver disease. They then introduced healthy liver cells into the lymph nodes by injection. Each of the six pigs had surgery and successfully grew miniature livers. As a result, they exhibited indications of recuperation from liver failure.

The human trial aims to assess the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of this regenerative cell therapy in a maximum of 12 individuals with end-stage liver disease (ESLD), a condition characterized by irreparable liver damage.
