People use Pinterest for inspiration, for DIY (do it yourself) and crafts, for food recipes and anything you can imagine, basically the website became some sort of a browser for visual contests. After updating their service with shopping and buyable pins, today Pinterest has introduced another feature, focused on better search options that now allow you to search for similar items within an image you are viewing.
The visual search tool has been revealed on Sunday and started working today. What the search tool actually does is to allow you to zoom in on any part of an image and instantly search for similar images. For example, if you are looking to redesign your room and find an image of a perfect room you might start searching for the items you need from that image. Let’s say you like the carpet in a picture, click the zoom button in the upper right corner of the picture and zoom in on the carpet. Instantly, by using this new visual search tool, similar results will appear and you might just buy your dream carpet from a buyable pin.
This update will surely, bring more users to Pinterest as it makes the whole searching process easier. Sure, you are more likely used to Google Images, but the visual search tool on Pinterest gives a larger spectrum as it doesn’t search for a particular item, it also bring similar images. Andrew Zhai, a Pinterest engineer confirmed that: “We optimize on visual similarity, not just duplicates to power Pinners to discovery exact results, as well as unexpected results that may be similar in style or pattern or shape.”
The new Pinterest update will be available on the web, but also on Android and iOS, so you can start pinning and visually searching for inspiration as soon as possible.
