A Recent Study Suggests PSVR2 Sales Have Gotten off to a “Slow Start”

Sales of Sony’s PSVR2 headset have gotten off to a “poor start,” according to a recent report by Bloomberg’s Takashi Mochizuki. Only about 270,000 units have been distributed to users since the product’s release in late February 2023. According to IDC’s data, “a price decrease on the PSVR2 will be needed to avert a complete disaster,” as stated by IDC’s Francisco Jeronimo. Sony has not revealed any official PSVR2 sales data or made any sales forecasts public.
Sony issued an official denial of assertions made in two prior Mochizuki pieces, prompting the comments and report. After reporting that Sony had cut its PSVR2 sales forecasts for the first quarter it spent on the market, the writer implied that the platform holder was having problems delivering PS5 devices prior to its late 2020 launch. Sony has explicitly refuted both of these statements, going so far as to assert that “enthusiasm from PlayStation enthusiasts for the imminent [PSVR2] launch”
The company hasn’t talked much about PSVR 2 outside of a corporate strategy conference in May 2022, but today’s article claims Sony will play “a leading role in the development of the metaverse” with it.
According to Circana’s official sales data, Sony’s PSVR2 device helped increase accessory sector sales by 13 percent year over year, which helped offset a fall in spending on controllers. This was coupled with the announcement that the PS5 sold the most units of any PlayStation hardware platform in a single month (February 2023). Sony may have sold more than 500,000 consoles, according to early estimates.
There is no way to verify the accuracy of Bloomberg’s recent report without access to official PSVR2 sales data from Sony. Sony clearly wasn’t anticipating the headset would sell like hotcakes from the get-go, what with its steep initial price tag and restricted availability outside of the PlayStation Direct website. Sony has yet to comment, so we can’t draw any final conclusions until we hear from them.

Download the Latest PS5 Firmware Now!

Sony’s PS5 firmware update is everyone’s favorite news story. It’s been a while, but don’t get too excited—this is just a minor one. No biggie.
PS5 system software 23.01-07.40.00 does what? Latest firmware patch notes:
- System software performance and stability increased.
- We improved screen messaging and usability.
That’s it! Sony’s definition of “some screens” is unclear, but perhaps it improves communications. PS5 messages weren’t a problem, though. The update is barely over 1GB, so updating your console won’t take long.
Excited for this PS5 update?
