The TimeSplitters series was an excellent shooter series that existed in the early-to-mid 00’s, with three games being released that were all well-received. A fourth game was in the works, but ultimately never saw the light of day and the series has remained dormant ever since.
However, some concept art for what would have been TimeSplitters 4 has surfaced, giving fans a look at what was in store for the fourth installment. Judging from the handful of folders, developer Free Radical Design was planning to keep with the design philosophy of the first three games with wonky character designs that ooze personality. We have everything from a zombie that is half-eaten by a fish to gun-wielding Siamese twins. You can check out all of the images through the imgur gallery.
Seeing the concept art makes me nostalgic for these old shooters, as they definitely have their own style that can’t be replicated. Crytek currently owns the rights to the franchise, though it doesn’t look like they’re planning to do anything with the series anytime soon. The last time the series was really discussed by the company was back in 2012, where they expressed hesitation with developing another game due to the games being hard to market. Discussions for developing a fourth game echoed this, with the series developer Steve Ellis claiming that the marketing people they worked with repeatedly told them that they didn’t know how to market the game.
The only hope fans really have at this point in seeing the series again is through a fan modding project called TimeSplitters Rewind. This project was announced back in 2012, and very little information on it has been released since then.
