Overwatch is one of the most popular games on the market currently with a playerbase that exploded right after release and continues to grow to this day. In just a year the game has established itself as a heavyweight in the FPS genre and has a growing esports scene. Despite its continued success, many players have criticized the game’s lack of quick content releases. While director Jeff Kaplan has assured players that more maps are in the works and that we should see a decent amount of new stuff in the second half of this year, maps aren’t the only thing that can keep a rabid player base appeased. A recent Overwatch leak has suggested that we may seen the inclusion of character weapon customization.
An image of Reinhardt holding a differently styled weapon, which we’ve included as the featured image for this article (and at the end for a closer look), is rumored to be a feature in development set for inclusion in the game in the near future. This Overwatch leak could suggest a future in which we can customize a character’s weapon in addition to just changing appearance with skins. While these changes will almost certainly be 100% cosmetic, cosmetic items is largely how Overwatch continues to prosper. Many players spend hundreds of hours (or dollars) chasing after loot boxes to receive new skins for their favorite heroes, and the golden weapon skin for heroes is only available after playing quite a long time in competitive gameplay.
While it’s definitely possible that this picture could be a very convincing photoshop, some users on reddit are pretty sure it’s an in development feature and that this Overwatch leak is legit.
“They just made Genji’s gold weapons more unique to each skin on the PTR, it makes sense they would make them more unique just before allowing players to mix and match them.”
Other users seem less convinced.
“This would lead to awful combinations that look terrible. Skin-specific weapons fit with the skins they’re made for. Combining them would look terrible.
What Overwatch really needs is hats with cool effects. /s”
What do you guys think of this Overwatch leak. Is it legit or just wishful thinking? As a game largely supported by people chasing after cosmetic changes, it would seem logical to add more of these.
