Volition’s Agents of Mayhem looks more bombastic and ludicrous with every trailer. The latest video isn’t all explosions and references, though; it also provides key information on three of the titular agents’ playstyles. But mostly it’s just explosions.
Agents of Mayhem’s new trailer focuses on three playable characters: Hollywood, Fortune, and Hardtack. Each of them is a member of the “Franchise Force,” a nickname Hollywood gave them, much to the chagrin of Fortune and Hardtack. The video provides much needed insight into their personalities and abilities.
Hollywood is portrayed as a show boater (the trailer’s words, not mine) and a glory hog. His weapon of choice is an assault rifle that can also fire grenades and comically over-sized neon spheres, complete with bowling ball sound effects. Furthermore, Hollywood can taunt enemies by putting on sunglasses and spontaneously creating explosions behind himself, probably because he’s an over the top actor who’s too cool to look at explosions.
Unlike Hollywood, Fortune is a manipulative, lying, backstabbing thief with attitude. Well, maybe she isn’t too unlike Hollywood, but I digress. In the trailer, Fortune mows down enemies with dual pistols and defies physics by jumping in mid-air. Twice. Furthermore, Fortune can throw grenades that trap enemies in domes of electric death, fire bullets that make her enemies explode into showers of purple lightning, and can use her drone G.L.O.R.Y. to stun enemies with electric bolts while she finishes them off.
Finally, Hardtack looks like he was partially inspired by Mr. T, albeit a more destructive version of him. Hardtack uses a shotgun and a harpoon he either throws or swings around like a club. Oh, and enemies the harpoon skewers teleport a short distance and then explode; I’m still trying to figure out how that works. Hardtack can also trap enemies in large, bouncy, energy bubbles that travel an extremely long distance when hit. Finally, the trailer demonstrates that Hardtack can create shock waves by charging forward; these shock waves drag everything that isn’t nailed down along with him.
I am thoroughly impressed with Volition’s ability to make Agents of Mayhem’s trailers informative and entertaining. I eagerly await the next trailer.
