Artificial Intelligence

InspiroBot, improving our lives, one horrifying poster at a time

InspiroBot, improving our lives, one horrifying poster at a time

Artificial intelligence is capable of incredible things. It can drive our cars, Defeat us at games we’ve played for centuries, help doctors identify cancer and even help with legal struggles. AI is so good at processing data and undertaking complex tasks that there are fears that it could even supplant humans in the coming decades. Yes, when AI is impressive it’s really impressive. That is probably why when things go wrong, they go really wrong. Or sometimes just hilariously wrong, as is the case with InspiroBot.

InspiroBot was created with a single purpose. To generate unlimited amounts of inspirational quotes in order enrich the pointless human experience. Well, it has certainly managed to enrich the human experience but I’m not that certain that what it’s generating could be considered to be well… Inspirational

InspiroBot is impressive and terrifying in equal measure

When you enter InspiroBot’s lair you are confronted with an inscrutable green eye, reminiscent of Hall 5000. Beneath this unwelcoming exterior is the promise of unique, inspirational quotes. Your mouse pointer hovers over the generate icon, and the eye shines green before an image with an inspirational quote flashes upon your screen.

Inspirobot

That… sort of makes sense, I think?

At first InspiroBot lulls you into a false sense of security. The poster it generated is a little little obscure and doesn’t quite make sense but then again that’s basically the raw ingredients of a motivational poster.

InspiroBot

Go home InspiroBot, you’re drunk

Then it begins to become a little unhinged. InspiroBot slowly begins to sound like that one friend you have who gets high and then thinks they’re super deep and thoughtful. Yes. I’m talking to you Steve.

Inspirobot

I’m just going to go very far away now…

Each click brings you deeper down the rabbit hole. It turns out that InspiroBot’s politics are not that far off from Frank Underwood’s.

InspiroBot

Okay I’ll admit, it does trend towards the surreal

InspiroBot also has a great sense of humor, offering up gems like this.

We can learn a lot from InspiroBot

If you keep clicking generate you’ll begin to notice that InspiroBot is an elaborate prank as the Robot soothingly informs you that “happiness is a quote a way”  and that “InspiroBot is always here for you”. The more you click the more obvious it is that the rudimentary AI behind InspiroBot is deliberately incompetent, which somehow only makes it more lovable. It turns out that InspiroBot is, dare I say it…. Actually Inspiring.

It reminds that us that we can be anything in this world, even if we’re really really bad at it. All we need to do is keep trying and eventually, just maybe, we’ll get it right.

Inspirobot

Okay, it’s not quite right, but bless it for trying
