uTorrent managed to disappoint quite a few people last month when parent company BitTorrent decided to bundle a Bitcoin miner called Epic Scale with the popular software. I’ve already discussed the matter in a previous article, but not it seems like it’s time to touch upon it again in light of some recent developments. Despite the fact that BitTorrent made it clear that installing Epic Scale is optional, many users reported that uTorrent is actually performing a silent install of the software and complained about it to no end. As a result, the company decided to not bundle the Bitcoin miner from now on in order to appease its users.
Starting with uTorrent version 3.4.3, things will go back to normal and will presumably remain that way for the foreseeable future. Not only that, but the company also came out and issued a statement in which they apologize for the whole thing. “We acknowledge again that we misjudged how this offer would be received, and we apologize to users who have objected to it or who had trouble uninstalling that software. We understand this has already eroded some users’ trust in μTorrent,” said BitTorrent’s Jory Berson on the uTorrent blog. The Vice President also mentions that this applies only to software downloaded directly from the company and that third-parties may still offer version 3.4.2, which includes the Epic Scale Bitcoin miner.
Despite BitTorrent initially stating that they are very happy with their collaboration with Epic Scale, it now seems like the Bitcoin miner has been removed for good and is unlikely to be offered again in the future. I guess the company really cares more about uTorrent users than about its business partners at the end of the day. I’m not sure how Epic Scale feels about all of this, but the users are probably very happy right now, which is what really matters if you ask me.
