Facebook AI built to help visually impaired people

Facebook AI built to help visually impaired people

November 5, 2015

Facebook is not only a social media website, it is also a company in development which is constantly looking for scientific ways of helping others to connect better. One of Facebook’s biggest research is in the artificial intelligence field where they are trying to build the best AI the world has seen. Facebook’s goal is to combine AI theories with algorithms, applications, software and hardware infrastructure, to build intelligent machines that in the future will come to our aid.

One of their recent project involves blind people or people who have visual difficulties by creating an interactive Facebook page. Yesterday Mark Zuckerberg the CEO of Facebook has posted a video that describes the AI software they have developed to help blind people have a Facebook profile.

This AI technology is supposed to describe pictures as you scroll down on your news feed.  “We’re still early with this technology, and you can already start to imagine how helpful it will be in the future.” said Zuckerberg. I can see this software being useful for people who had a good vision before an accident that left them visually impaired. With today’s technology, scientists are able to create an artificial network that resembles the brain’s network that has the capacity of storing the information that can easily be accessed when needed.

Based on this artificial network with a recognition software, AI will be able to scan a picture, identify it with something that is already stored in its memory and describe it. The present project is still in development but we hope it will be available soon.

Check out the video Here.

Who doesn’t enjoy listening to a good story. Personally I love reading about the people who inspire me and what it took for them to achieve their success. As I am a bit of a self confessed tech geek I think there is no better way to discover these stories than by reading every day some articles or the newspaper . My bookcases are filled with good tech biographies, they remind me that anyone can be a success. So even if you come from an underprivileged part of society or you aren’t the smartest person in the room we all have a chance to reach the top. The same message shines in my beliefs. All it takes to succeed is a good idea, a little risk and a lot of hard work and any geek can become a success. VENI VIDI VICI .
