Many Lumia fans are now wondering if the Lumia 10xx series is dead and done for. Microsoft launched the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL but failed to launch a successor to the acclaimed Lumia 1020 camera smartphone. Rumors about a successor named the Lumia 1030 had surfaced last Summer but never came to fruition. Now, there are murmurs in the rumor world saying that the Lumia 1020 successor will in fact be launched as the Microsoft Lumia 1050.
The Microsoft Lumia 1050 is seen by many as the ultimate Lumia device, inspired by the cancelled McLaren. People familiar with the matter have come forward and told us to expect the Lumia 1050 release date to come around early in 2016. The rumor relies on two things: an internal memo and on the fact that the new device would need powerful hardware, like the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 CPU. The Snapdragon 820 CPU is going to start getting featured in flagships early next year, so the timing sounds right.
At the last device launch, Microsoft did not say anything about future Lumia devices, but our source seems confident that the Lumia 1050 is in the works and will be ready for consumers by the MWC next March. Take this with a grain of salt, especially since the number of leaks and rumors about this device are rather scarce. We hope they are true though, because many believe Microsoft would miss out on a huge opportunity by not releasing another niche device like the Lumia 1030.
Apparently, the Lumia 1050 specs will include the Snapdragon 820 processor, 4 GB RAM, expandable storage, included cloud storage via Azure (interesting tip here, suggests a cloud service targeted at professional photographers), and a whopping 128 GB internal storage. The device, being more of a camera than a smartphone, will feature a massive camera sensor, even more advanced that the PureView cameras Microsoft has been using. What kind of sensor that is is unknown at this time, but our tipster says we should expect optical zoom and advanced optical image stabilization, not to mention 4K recording.
The Microsoft Lumia 1050 is a very interesting prospect to look at it and while it’s still very much up in te air, some people of the industry are confident that it is a real device in the works. Since proof is scarce, we’re going to have to wait and find out more about this matter. How many of you would like to have an entirely new Lumia 1050 camera/smartphone? I know I would be more than enthusiastic about that.
