Apple’s MacBook Air line-up of ultraportables might be getting a couple of new additions early next year as rumors about a new 15-inch MacBook Air surfaced this morning. The Cupertino company is keeping mum about their plans for 2016, despite the world buzzing about the new Apple Watch second gen model, Samsung contracts for OLED screen supplies and the new MacBook Air 2016. Although there’s still half of 2016 left until we actually get to see new Apple ultrabooks, the rumor mills are already churning and reports about the new MacBook Air 2016 release date have already settled on a consensus that it will be launched at WWDC 2016.
The 2015 MacBook with Retina display generated reports about the Air line-up being canceled early in the year, but a new report coming from Taiwanese Economic Daily News suggests that the MacBook Air is indeed being developed and getting ready for a June 2016 launch. Although the report cannot be verified, seeing as Apple doesn’t disclose information like this to the public so early in the product development cycle, the information is interesting and suggests a new angle for the MacBook Air.
The new MacBook Air 2016 would target the 15-inch mainstream sector and that corroborated with the launch of the iPad Pro and Retina MacBook this year, suggests launching a larger Air rather than a smaller one, for which demands are already met by the two devices already on the market, as a sensible development. Getting rid of the 11-inch MacBook Air seems like the sensible thing to do, seeing as consumer trends have been gravitating towards larger displays for the past few years – a trend evident when it comes to all screens we use on a daily basis, including smartphones, tablets, monitors, TVs and laptops.
We need to keep in mind however, that Apple has not confirmed that they would be making a 15-inch MacBook Air and until that happens, all the info surrounding the alleged WWDC launch of the ultraportable should be taken with a grain of salt. Apple is known to go down paths seemingly less-traveled with their products, but we are fairly convinced that a 15-inch MacBook Air is down the path somewhere, anyway. An 11-inch model might not be necessary, since the Retina MacBook fits into spot nicely. However, the report does mention that we should expect a few different sizes of the device to be launched – including a 13-inch model.
The MacBook Air release date is most likely going to fall around WWDC 2016, since there are few better times and places to launch an ultrabook during the year. Apple is also expected to launch a new version of the Apple Watch, so it’s also possible that these two end up accompanying each other. Nonetheless, keep in mind that until a few days ago, most people thought there won’t be any MacBook Air, Apple fulfilling that demand with better MacBooks and MacBook Pros. At this time, we can’t know for sure, but we’re excited nonetheless. Apple always promises to innovate, and sometimes they actually do. Maybe the MacBook Air will represent an entirely new angle for the company, for all we know.
