Peter Rosas, also known as Combofiend has retired from Capcom a few days ago. The man known for his professional fighting game track record has made an announcement in Capcom’s official website. For those who don’t know, Combofiend has played an important role in the development of eSports. Representing the US in various fighting game tournaments like multiple editions of EVO.
However, not everything is sunshine and rainbows, as his latest collaborations with Capcom have been quite infamous. Because he was one of the players behind games like Street Fighter V and Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite. Some people might remember one of his most infamous quotes during the development of MVCI.
If you were to actually think about it, these characters are just functions. They’re just doing things. Magneto, case and point, is a favorite because he has eight-way dash and he’s really fast, right? So our more technical players, all they want to do is triangle jump and that kind of stuff. Well guess what? Nova can do the same thing; Captain Marvel can do the same thing; Ultron can do the same thing.
That wasn’t exactly Rosas’ brightest moment to be honest. The meme soon caught on and people were relentless on the guy shortly afterwards. For example, let’s look at this video that demonstrates the stupidity behind “Function Vs. Function” meme quite perfectly.
“I’m happy to see there are more people than ever enjoying Capcom fighting games; whether they’re playing or spectating.” Says the letter in the Blog Post made by Combofiend. “I can honestly say that it makes me happy to see the newer generation of players creating rivalries and friendships, as well as discussing, analyzing and bonding over these games the same ways I used to and still do.”
He also mentions that he will not leave fighting game communities or games. In fact, the man will continue to keep on participating to make eSports more popular and mainstream. Just keep him away from interviews.
