Ark Survival Evolved is one of the most popular games on Steam. Something about a survival game mixed with building and dinosaurs appeals to a wide and loyal audience. Something important for the success of a game, however, is regular updates and – in some cases – changes. Some games go all out with changing the landscape of their games, like Guild Wars 2 totally destroying a city. Studio Wildcard is going with a little less drastic, yet still significant, action by erupting Ark Survival Evolved’s Volcano.
After the next big PC update, V257, the top of the volcano will be replaced with a pool of lava. All player characters and structures in the near vicinity will be destroyed with this eruption, so Studio Wildcard is encouraging players to plan for this change in advance to avoid unexpected losses. Those who are unsure if their buildings will be affected will be happy to hear of convenient markers currently in game marking the exact radius of Ark Survival Evolved’s Volcano eruption. If only we had these warnings in real life!
The eruption is for more than just flavor, however, as the volcano is being revamped to include a brand new Tek Cave. As another dungeon, these encounters are rumored to be the most difficult players have seen yet. Studio Wildcard is making sure players are up to the challenge, however, by requiring both the Boss and Alpha Predator trophies before you can re-explore Ark Survival Evolved’s Volcano turned dungeon.
As cool as this eruption is, it’s not quite what the developers had planned. The original plan for Ark Survival Evolved’s volcano was to have it erupt gradually and in real time while servers were live, but the mechanics of that plan didn’t quite work out with the way the rest of the island is currently designed.
I’m not a frequent player of the game, but I think it’s cool that the introduction of new content is accompanied by actual environmental change as Ark Survival Evolved’s Volcano changes the landscape. Other games have done similar changes, but Ark seems to be the first one that will actually destroy player-made content with this eruption. It will be cool to see what the world looks like after this eruption and jump into a new dungeon with the release of patch V257.
