A former Facebook employee is going to sue the social network titan. The reason why he’s making such a thing is because he got fired after complaining about how they treat older employees. In other words, he has been facing Age Discrimination while working for the company.
Gary Glouner, a 52-year-old man, said in his lawsuit that Facebook had a record of getting rid of employees older than 50. Telling them they were a “poor cultural fit” and they “didn’t move fast enough,” or that they “didn’t get it” according to City News Service. After they were let go, the older workers would be replaced with younger ones at Facebook, Glouner said in his lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court.
Glouner’s other allegations include wrongful discharge, disability discrimination, retaliation and intentional infliction of emotional distress. The employee in question had a history of disabilities that caused him to have seizures, clinical depression and anxiety. However, during his medical absence he was laid off on the grounds of not meeting the company’s expectations.
Glouner worked in global business development and partnerships at Facebook in April 2013. There is a complicated web for how he reached his position in Facebook: He worked for WebFives, a social media startup acquired by Microsoft in 2007. Once acquired, he worked at Microsoft until 2013, when Facebook bought Atlas online advertising business.
Facebook responded to this lawsuit by mentioning that the basis for the accusation was “Full of inaccuracies”. Not to mention that the company had also “worked extensively with Mr. Glouner to accommodate his medical issues.” Concluding with the fact that “His separation from the company had nothing to do with age, disability or any of the reasons stated in his complaint.”
It’s only a matter of time before we see how this case unfolds. There are two sides where this can be seen as discrimination. One where Facebook is right and we’re seeing an angry man who got fired for his low performance. Or the other where the Glouner is right and Facebook shows a lot of discrimination towards older people and prefers youngsters.
