Star Ocean 5: Integrity and Faithlessness Will Address Issues With Star Ocean 3 Infamous Twist
Star Ocean 5: Integrity and Faithlessness, the new entry of the Star Ocean series currently in development for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, is one of the more welcome announcements of the past few months, as pretty much all fans of the series though that we wouldn’t see another Star Ocean game anytime soon. The game has been confirmed for the West earlier this week but more solid gameplay details are still scarce.
Some new details on Star Ocean 5: Integrity and Faithlessness have emerged online recently thanks to a new interview posted on Venture Beat with Shuichi Kobayashi, producer of the game. In the interview, Mr. Kobayashi reveals some new interesting details on the game’s battle system, soundtrack and also address the controversial issue related to the big plot twist found in Star Ocean 3: Till The End Of Time, a twist that influences the whole saga.
When asked about the matter, Mr. Kobayashi confirmed that the twist wasn’t exactly something new in the eyes of the team but they realized that it wasn’t communicated properly. Star Ocean 5: Integrity and Faithlessness will address this issue in its story and reveal how the team now looks at the Star Ocean universe.
Question: I’ve read that Star Ocean V is set between the second and third games. Star Ocean 3 had the big plot twist, that you were inside a video game, an MMO. Is that part of the story here? Can you talk about the context of the game’s story.
Shuichi: All the stories from Star Ocean 1 through 5 are set in the same universe. That hasn’t changed. In terms of timeline, the story of number five is between two and three. That’s correct. You mentioned MMOs. I think that quite recently, a British philosopher said something in relation to that. He said that he believes the world we live in is a world in beta, created by some godly figure somewhere. Looking at your universe in that particular way is nothing new. We have explored it early, but the way we communicated that and other ideas was not—it had a little too much twist in it. People couldn’t really fathom it. They were struggling to see what was actually going on. In number five’s story, we’d like to address that issue, so that people can see how we look at the universe in the game. It’s going to be easier to take in.
From what we can understand from this interview, Mr. Kobayashi and his team really seem to have understood the issues that plagued the previous Star Ocean: The Last Hope and are working hard to correct them so we might be in for a game that could rival the first entries of the series if everything goes well.
Star Ocean 5: Integrity and Faithlessness has been revealed earlier this year. The game is currently in development by tri-Ace, the team behind the other entries of the series, and it will come with several new features not found in the previous entries of the series, such as more dynamic and interactive cutscenes, seamless transitions between story and gameplay sequences and more.
Star Ocean 5: Integrity and Faithlessness will be released later this year in Japan on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. The game has also been confirmed for North America and Europe, launching on a yet to be confirmed 2016 release date.
Helldivers 2 proved to be a surprising success, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the gaming industry. As per Circana analyst Mat Piscatella, it currently ranks as Sony’s seventh highest grossing game in the United States to date, trailing behind a trio of Spider-Man titles, a couple of God of War games, and Ghost of Tsushima. It’s only been on the market for less than three months and is not even being sold at full price.
According to Piscatella, a significant factor contributing to the game’s success is its release on PC. He mentioned that, based on Circana’s Player Engagement Tracker, the game has consistently ranked first in terms of active users on Steam in the US since its launch, including April. The release of Helldivers 2 on both PlayStation and PC has been an extraordinary triumph.
He stated that Helldivers 2 has already become the seventh highest-grossing Sony-published game in history. Without a PC, it would not currently be considered one of the top 20 games. While I’m emphasizing the success of the PC SKU, it’s important to note that I’m not disregarding the success of the PlayStation SKU. I just wanted to clarify that. This launch has proven to be incredibly successful.
Prior to the release of Helldivers 2, Sony made it clear that they would be launching their live service-style titles simultaneously on both the PS5 and PC.
