Nintendo’s Switch console has been a big success so far for the company, already surpassing the sales of the Wii U in just over a year of being on the market. While things have slowed down recently as the new games lineup has gotten a little thin, it is still set to be the best-selling console of the year.
This information was revealed by the NPD Group’s Mat Pistacella, who said that it will ultimately be a strong final quarter that will ensure its victory. The Switch is projected to have a big Q4 thanks to the release of huge games like Pokemon and Super Smash Bros., which should each sell like hot cakes.
However, that’s not to say that things will look bad for the other consoles, as Pistacella also claims that each console will sell over 4 million units this year. Cumulatively, they are expected to sell 17.5 million units, which will be the highest total in the market since 2012. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One’s install bases are also expected to exceed those of the PlayStation 2 and original Xbox by 6%, and well ahead of PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 by at least 30% for their respective equivalent time periods.
For those counting the days until physical media is gone for good, things are actually looking up for the medium. NPD reports that physical video games sales will be up at least 8% compared to last year, though digital sales will continue to grow at double digit percentage rates.
