House of the Dead Returns with a Japanese-only Arcade Cabinet Test
House of the Dead, Sega’s popular zombie-themed light gun game, is just like the living dead; even when you think it’s gone, it eventually returns. And return it shall. In Japan, anyway.
Sega recently announced that between January 19th and 21st, gamers will be able to test the first arcade cabinet of the latest entry in the House of the Dead franchise, House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn, at the Sega Akihabara Building 3 in Tokyo, Japan. The game will utilize the Unreal Engine 4, not only to provide some of the most terrifying House of the Dead zombies to date but also to fill the screen with virtual monstrosities out for flesh. According to the site, House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn will boast the highest number of on-screen zombies in the series, and judging by the screenshots, I believe that claim.
Lately, arcade cabinets have become more complex and have tried to include various gimmicks to make each experience unique. The same can be said of the House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn cabinet. Not only will gamers sit in a fancy and appropriately themed “theater type enclosure,” the cabinet will include “air cannon” and “vibrating seat” gimmicks to help players feel as if they are in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. Also, the cabinet will glow to attract potential players.
While the arcade cabinet test will only be available for an extremely limited time in Japan, given the popularity of the House of the Dead franchise in the West, it is only a matter of time before Scarlet Dawn eventually makes its way to European and American arcades. After all, the series has been running strong since 1997 and has received numerous spin-offs, ports, and even some (critically panned) movies. An English version of House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn is basically a foregone conclusion and will make an excellent addition to any local arcade or Dave and Buster’s.
