Global warming has already become a major worldwide problem despite what the naysayers might claim. Unfortunately for all of us, this problem is likely to get even worse in the years to come as developed countries as making surprisingly few efforts to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions emanating from within their territory. For the last couple of decades people have been blaming the United States for the problem seeing as how the country seems to be polluting more than any other. Although the blame may have been justified in the past, the US is now apparently being surpassed by China as the biggest generator of greenhouse gases and leading cause of global warming according to two recent studies.
It’s no secret that China has been working very hard for the last several years to expand its global power and influence. As a result, China has been able to consolidate its place among the most powerful countries in the world alongside the US, Russia and a few others, but its quick rise to power also resulted in a bigger contribution to the global warming problem. One of the aforementioned studies suggests that China will surpass the US as the main contributor of greenhouse gases during this year or the next. Needless to say, all eyes will be turned on China once that happens as people are desperately in need of blaming someone for global warming and its increasingly visible consequences.
Just as its name suggests, global warming is an issue that affects all the countries in the world. The greenhouse gases released in the atmosphere don’t stay above the country emitting them for very long, with the pollution travelling to other countries and slowly but surely engulfing the world. This is precisely why pressuring a single country to reduce its greenhouse gases emissions will not fix the problem in the long run. In order to resolve the issue of global warming all countries (but especially the most developed ones) must work together towards coming up with a viable solution to the problem. Later this year representatives from almost 200 countries will meet in Paris to try and come up with a long-term plan for combating global warming. We can only hope that the upcoming meeting will be successful.
