Welcome to part five. This is my list of most tragic characters. If you’re looking for the first entry then you can find it here. However if you’re just looking for the next entry then cast your eyes approximately two centimetres down your computer screen and you’ll find what you’re looking for.
Matt Murdock really cannot catch a break. It’s the raw intensity and tragedy behind the character of Daredevil which is what has lent so well to the dark and gritty TV show that Drew Goddard has been creating.
If you’ve been following this series you’ll notice that I touched upon the shifting continuity of comic books in both my Wolverine and Mr. Freeze articles, and the truth is still the same here. Ongoing comic book series often have a lot of continuity problems,; they’re prone to reboots, and it’s not helped by frequent crossovers and occasionally series featuring the same character running along side each other at the same time, such as The Amazing Spider-Man running along side The Spectacular Spider-Man.
Needless to say it’s not always completely clear which series are canon to which other series, and also whether new writer’s runs are canon to old writer’s runs. I’m sure it’s easier to understand for the more hardcore comic book fan but for a new person coming in it can be very intimidating.
So I’m being clear and saying that when I talk about Daredevil I am talking about Frank Miller’s run on Daredevil as it is the one that I am most familiar with.
Anyway as I was saying before, Matt Murdock cannot catch a break. Apart from being blinded as a kid and losing his father, we have seen everything that can possibly go wrong, happen to this guy.
Spider-Man’s girlfriend died? Daredevil loses just about any woman he even so much as winks at (most of them thanks to Bullseye). Batman is tiptoeing the fine line between sane and insane? Daredevil has had more mental breakdowns than you can shake a stick at, and we fully see the effects as he grows more violent and beats criminals harder and harder as his life gets worse.
This is without mentioning his ex-girlfriend being hooked on heroine and giving his name up and letting it fall into the hands of The Kingpin! Just about the last person you’d ever want having your secret identity.
Oh Matt, we love you, and we hope your life gets better sometime soon.
