Splatoon 2 Announces New Horde Game Mode “Salmon Run”

Splatoon 2 Announces New Horde Game Mode “Salmon Run”

Nintendo released a Direct video today that, among other things, elaborated on some new features in Splatoon 2. Most of the new information centered around their newly announced game mode called “Salmon Run.” In this new mode, players team up to fight incoming waves of the fish-like Salmonid species. The game mode seems to incorporate many features that are to be expected from a horde-like game mode, including bosses and varied enemy types. The video also alluded to special rewards for participants in this game mode.

In addition to the new game mode, three new Amiibos were announced to be released alongside the Splatoon 2. These new figures allow players to store their clothing and weapon loadouts on their Amiibo. From there, the player can switch their current loadout with whatever is stored on the Amiibo figure. These figures can also gift you rare clothing and weapons. They also showed that Splatoon 2 is going to incorporate features to allow pictures to be shared to social media directly from the Switch’s photo album.

At first glance, the new game mode doesn’t seem to do anything to revolutionize the horde game type. For fans of Splatoon, however, more game modes are never a bad thing. Adding a co-op game mode is great for a console that promotes portability and playing with your friends wherever you go. The announcement of new Amiibos is hardly a surprise. Hopefully the functionality of saving loadouts isn’t strictly limited to Amiibos, as being able to quickly and easily switch between different sets of clothing and weapons would be a nice quality of life improvement for Splatoon 2.

The last piece of information Nintendo revealed was that Splatoon 2 will release on July 21st. Splatoon fans will only have to wait two more months to get their hands on the newest title in Nintendo’s freshest IP.
