Save on Spooky Games This Halloween with GOG’s Halloween Sale

Save on Spooky Games This Halloween with GOG’s Halloween Sale
Aaron Greenbaum
October 26, 2017

PC gamers are always excited for the next Steam sale (which should start today), but what about GOG sales? They provide just as many discounts on games, but they’re arguably better than Steam sales since GOG games are DRM-free, and gamers earn free games if they purchase $x worth of video games. Since it’s almost Halloween, now’s the perfect time to buy some creepy games, courtesy of GOG. Here’s a few of the games currently on sale:

Dead Space — $3.99

The loss of Visceral Games is fresh in our minds, so why not honor the studio’s memory with their best game, Dead Space? The game brought back survival horror with claustrophobic corridors, horrific enemies, and sound and lighting that is guaranteed to make players jump at their own shadows.

Outlast — $2.99

Is being trapped in a creepy, derelict spaceship armed only with retrofitted power tools not scary enough for you? Well how about a game where you are trapped in a run-down psychiatric hospital without any weapons? That’s what you get with Outlast, one of the scariest survival horror games in recent years. Can you avoid the deranged lunatics and discover the horrible secrets of the asylum? Well, if you can, you should also try Outlast II for $17.99, which is more of the same but ramped up to eleven. And you can always buy both for $20.98.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines — $4.99

Forget about fighting against vampires, in Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, you are a vampire! Sure, the game’s buggy and unfinished, but plenty of easily-obtainable fan patches and mods fix these problems and give gamers the definitive vampire experience. Plus, gamers looking for more Vampire: The Masquerade goodness can purchase the more old-school RPG Vampire: The Masquerade – Redemption for $4.49, or both for $9.98.

Bulb Boy – $8.08

Bulb Boy demonstrates it’s possible to mix creepy with cute. A point and click game that puts players in the shoes of the titular Bulb Boy, gamers need to fight off evil forces and use their heads (and Bulb Boy’s) to save his house and grandpa. This game is nothing if not unique.

DOOM 3: BFG Edition — $6.79

It might not be the modern FPS classic that is 2016’s DOOM, but DOOM 3 is still a fantastic game that tried to take the franchise in a survival horror direction and mostly succeeded. DOOM 3: BFG Edition comes with the base game, all the expansion packs, DOOM 1 and 2, and various quality of life improvements, such as better textures and an armor-mounted flashlight; no longer will you have to decide between seeing oncoming demons and shooting them.

Victor Vran — $4.99

Victor Vran is an isometric twin-stick shooter RPG with a gothic horror paint job; think Diablo meets Van Helsing with a bit of Castlevania for flavor. The game is action-packed and guaranteed to get your heart racing. Plus, when players are finished with the main game, they can play the DLC campaigns ($8.99 each or $22.97 for the game and all the DLC), Victor Vran: Fractured Worlds and Victor Vran: Motorhead – Through the Ages. And no, that’s not a typo; Victor Vran (voiced by Geralt himself, Doug Cockle) teams up with Motorhead’s Lemmy and Lloyd Kaufman in the second DLC campaign, all while rocking out to the best of the band’s music; it’s as metal as it sounds.

Deadly Premonition: Director’s Cut — $2.49

A love letter to Twin Peaks fans, Deadly Premonition is a love it or hate it game. It’s weird; it’s creepy; it’s serious; it’s campy – all at the same time. Deadly Premonition takes place in a small, mountain town in the middle of nowhere beset by weird, supernatural forces and a murdering spree, and everything about the game is memorable, from the characters to the music. If you had your doubts about picking this one up, now’s your chance, since it’s cheaper than a cup of coffee.

Corpse Party — $9.69

I’m just going to warn you right now: Corpse Party is not for everyone. It’s twisted, demented, and breaks all the taboos of horror games. The game might have an almost cute pixel/anime aesthetic, but unless you have an iron stomach, you won’t last long playing Corpse Party. Still, those who manage to stick around will find an engrossing story with more (and better) plot twists than a Shyamalan movie

Lucius – $1.99

Lucius sets players in the role of the antichrist and tasks them with creatively killing the people around a large mansion, so it’s basically The Omen: The Video Game. Lucius might not be as polished as others discounted during GOG’s Halloween sale, but it’s morbidly entertaining, and it’s a puzzle game where players take control of the villain; you don’t see that very often

The Suffering — $7.99

One of GOG’s most recent acquisition, this psychological horror game places gamers in the shoes of convicted murderer Torque as he fights his way out of a prison swarming with monsters fueled by the suffering souls of the prison’s victims. It’s not a survival horror game, but The Suffering has its share of scares. Gamers can also continue Torque’s story in The Suffering: Ties that Bind, which is also $7.99. Both can bought for $15.98.

Anyone who buys $15 or more worth of games during the sale will receive a free copy of Tales from the Borderlands (not exactly the most Halloween-y of games, but whatever). Plus, GOG Connect will let gamers import the following games from their Steam library to their GOG library:

  • Amnesia: The Dark Descent and A Machine for Pigs
  • Hand of Fate
  • Nosferatu: Wrath of Malachi
  • The Walking Dead: Seasons 1, 2, Michonne, and A New Frontier
  • Bad Mojo Redux
  • Corpse Party
  • Darkwood
  • Deadly Premonition: Director’s Cut
  • Dracula 4+5
  • Gabrial Knight: Since of the Fathers – 20th Anniversary Edition
  • Knock Knock
  • The Last Door: Collector’s Edition and Season 2 Collector’s Edition
  • Layers of Fear
  • >observer
  • Pathologic Classic HD
  • Postal: Classic and Uncut
  • Realms of the Haunting
  • Hattered Haven
  • SKYHILL
  • Smugglers V: Invasion
  • SOMA
  • STASIS
  • Sunless Sea
  • The Void

Don’t worry, the games you import will remain on your Steam library; GOG Connect is just an option for players who want DRM-free versions. But, the Halloween deals and GOG Connect games will only be available for a limited time, so gamers should act fast.
