I was just a little kid when the first movie came out so this news kinda throws me back in time a little. After 20 years from its release, the Independence Day movie is finally getting a sequel. And there is a release date this time around, set to June 24, 2016 in the United States. Thor’s brother is going to replace Will Smith in the new movie. With almost all the original cast returning to fight in a second invasion, it seems only Will Smith doesn’t care about the fate of humanity anymore, as he decided not to be a part of this. The leading role was offered to Liam Hemsworth, the younger brother of Chris Hemsworth.
Liam Hemsworth is better known for his role in The Hunger Games where we portraits Gale Hawthorne, the best friend of Katniss Everdeen, the main character of the movies/books. While I don’t remember his performance to be spectacular in the Hunger Games series, I could see him grow to be a good actor. However I think a movie about an alien invasion is not really the best opportunity for someone to prove his acting skills.
The filming for the movie has already started yet no plot synopsis was announced. We’ll have to wait and see what’s going to happen this time. The visual effects evolved so much in the last 20 years so I expect this to look amazing. Maybe even find out more about the nasty aliens who want to destroy Earth so bad. It was the realism of the effects that made the previous Independence Day movie to be the box office winner for 1996 with a total grossing of $306,169,268. With that much money on the table, it’s a wonder that it took them so much time to make a second part. There are expected to be at least 2 new Independence Day movies, this one in the summer of 2016 and a third one set to 2017.
