Troll Ends Indie Dev’s Kickstarter Campaign

A fake pledge on Kickstarter has brought to an end the efforts by 2Awesome Studio to fund their game. Though the project came close to being funded, the actions of a single troll ruined the campaign and left the indie developers heartbroken.

2Awesome Studio launched the Kickstarter campaign to fund their space adventure game, Dimension Drive. The game was going to be styled like a comic book and had some interesting ideas behind it. The Dutch studio needed €30,000 to achieve its goal, and just as the deadline for their campaign was approaching, they were short by €7,000. All hope seemed lost until a single pledge appeared under the name Jonathon, promising to fund the remaining amount. Needless to say, 2Awesome Studio was thrilled by the generous pledge and took to Twitter to spread the good news.

Sadly, around 30 minutes before the deadline, the pledge was pulled. Kickstarter had removed it because it had been found to be fraudulent. Apparently, “Jonathon” had made numerous similar troll pledges to various campaigns and 2Awesome Studio was the latest target. The fake pledge not only broke the small developer’s dreams, but it also may have led to legitimate potential backers deciding not to make a pledge because they could see that the goal had already been reached. And with just half an hour remaining between the pledge being removed and the end of the campaign, there wasn’t a lot of time for other pledges to be made.

A campaign that was looking like it might just succeed ended up getting stomped. It’s hard not to feel for 2Awesome Studio, especially since they clearly put a lot of time and dedication into their game. Over the years, Kickstarter has enabled tons of cool new projects to come to fruition, and while plenty of projects fail miserably, nobody should be subjected to this. 2Awesome Studio has received a flood of supportive messages over social media and has promised to bounce back.

Firaxis, the strategy game studio behind XCOM (the reboots) and Civilization, laid off employees. According to Axios, 30 Take-Two Interactive-owned and 2K Games-published employees were laid off.

After a streak of hits (XCOM 2, Civ 6), the studio’s most recent release, the XCOM-inspired, card-powered Marvel’s Midnight Suns, was a critical hit but a commercial disaster.

The Marvel IP didn’t attract core gamers to strategic games. This is unfortunate because local critics virtually all agree Midnight Suns is great and made by a renowned company. How could it be anything else when directed by Jake Solomon, the most imaginative strategic mind among Sid “The Father of Computer Gaming” Meir’s personally mentored acolytes and true successor to a legacy as old as the medium?

Metal Gear Delta: Snake Eater will reuse the original voice lines, which isn’t surprising as the original voice cast is returning.

Tommy Williams, Konami America’s chief of communications, verified the story for the Verge. We’re sure David Hayter has the most work, but reuniting the gang wasn’t simple.

He also confirmed that the title triangle is pronounced “delta.” In mathematics, the fourth letter of the ancient Greek alphabet represents change without modifying structure.

Kojima wasn’t involved with the project. Do you like this tribute? Do you prefer modern script or antique lines?

Indie games are sold through Devolver Digital, the industry’s most colorful and eccentric publisher. Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest will host a fresh showcase on June 8 at 3 p.m. PT or 11 p.m. BST. Devolver Digital’s odd metanarrative format will make things unpleasant.

If you’re unfamiliar, we recommend going alone. Games will exist—likely well-curated ones. Last year’s screening introduced us to the adorable Aussie indie Cult of the Lamb, which became a cult smash.

Will you stream Devolver? Expect what?
