The French defense ministry has selected companies to work on the development of quantum computers

France’s defense procurement agency has granted contracts to five local computer-research businesses to create technologies for two universal quantum computer prototypes by 2032, aiming to produce quantum systems suitable for defense needs.

The Armed Forces Ministry announced in an email statement on March 6 that the framework agreements with five companies—Alice & Bob, C12, Pasqal, Quandela, and Quobly—amount to a maximum of €500 million (US$545 million).

Three years ago, President Emmanuel Macron introduced a national quantum strategy to provide France with the necessary computer power to ensure its sovereignty in the sector. Quantum computing utilizes quantum physics principles to solve intricate problems more rapidly than classical computers, aiming to achieve quantum advantage.

The ministry stated that quantum technology is highly significant for the Armed Forces, with potential uses in cryptography and communications. The ongoing revolution will enable us to observe our surroundings with unparalleled accuracy, uncover novel materials, investigate new methods of transferring data, and travel in areas where the GPS system is not available.

The Defense Digital Agency, often known as AND, which is part of the procurement agency, will manage the development of quantum-computer prototypes.

Google, IBM, and other companies have developed the initial generation of quantum computers. However, issues related to stability and scalability are hindering the progress of commercial applications. Quantum computing stores information in qubits, which can be in several states at once, potentially allowing it to surpass ordinary binary systems.

Two years ago, France unveiled a hybrid quantum computing network that links conventional systems with quantum computers, providing access to academic institutions, startups, and business partners.

The French ministry stated that all five French firms have the potential to face the task, but it is premature to determine which one will successfully navigate the engineering, production, and industrialization obstacles. This cooperation involves a three-stage competition: proof of concept, maturation, and industrialization.

After four years of the initiative, the ministry will maintain the three most successful projects to build the best logic qubits capable of scaling up. After eight years, the competition will focus on two technologies evolving from prototype computers with 128 logic qubits to commercial systems with 2,048 qubits, aimed at being usable by their initial users.

Alice & Bob, situated in Paris, was established in 2020 and has secured over €30 million in funding to develop a universal quantum computer with error correction. C12, established in the same year and headquartered in Paris, is utilizing carbon nanotubes to construct its quantum processor, following the acquisition of €10 million in seed funding in 2021.

Pasqal, established in 2019, has secured about €140 million so far to construct a quantum computer utilizing neutral atoms arranged in arrays. Quandela secured over €50 million in funding in November and is utilizing photonics as its preferred technology due to its scalability and operation at room temperature. Quobly is creating fault-tolerant quantum computing processors that can be manufactured using current semiconductor fabs. The business, situated in Grenoble, just completed its initial investment round of €19 million.

During the Google I/O 2024 developer conference, Google unveiled a new feature for Android called Theft Detection Lock. This feature is specifically designed to safeguard against the increasing risk of theft. Once activated, the AI-driven function will automatically secure the device.

According to Google, if your phone detects a typical movement related to theft, it will rapidly lock the screen to prevent thieves from easily accessing your data. An instance of such a stimulus is a mechanism that abruptly initiates rapid motion in the opposite direction.

Google is implementing an offline device lock feature, specifically designed to safeguard the device in the event of intentional disconnection from the network. Occurrences such as consistently failing to authenticate the phone will activate that functionality.

The forthcoming update will also introduce functionality that enhances the level of difficulty for malefactors attempting to perform a remote factory reset on your device. According to Google, this upgrade prevents thieves from setting up a stolen device again without having knowledge of your device or Google account credentials, even if they force a reset. By rendering a stolen device unsellable, it diminishes the motivation for individuals to engage in phone theft.

Biometric authentication will be mandatory for modifying sensitive information while the device is connected from an unsecured location.

Google states that the new “Web” filter will be visible either at the top of the results page or within the “More” option, depending on the specific search query.

The launch acknowledges that there are instances when individuals simply desire to display text-based links to web pages, which are typically considered less significant nowadays as Google either provides answers directly in its informational Knowledge Panels or, more recently, through AI experiments.

The Google SearchLiaison X account is noted. The post stated that this addition was made in response to feedback from users who expressed a preference for seeing only web page links in their search results. This preference may arise when users are searching for longer-form text documents, using devices with limited internet access, or simply preferring text-based results to be displayed separately from search features. “If you belong to that particular group, I hope you have a pleasant experience!”

Google has specified that on mobile devices, the new “Web” filter will be displayed by default, along with the other filters, without necessitating users to access the “More” menu. On desktop, Google will display the filters that appear to be the most pertinent to the search results.

Google announced that the feature will be gradually released to users worldwide over the course of today and tomorrow.

The announcement of a “Web” filter is bound to spark some controversy, especially among the SEO community.
