Microsoft 2015 Build conference: new Lumia, HoloLens and heaps more

Microsoft 2015 Build conference: new Lumia, HoloLens and heaps more
John Cusack
April 29, 2015

The Microsoft 2015 Build developer conference is about to kick off in San Francisco and we expect Satya Nadella to come forth with quite a few new things that are going to be the focus of Microsoft this year. Although the focus of the Microsoft 2015 Build Conference is to familiarize developers with the new Windows 10 and Windows 10 for Phones platform, there are some neat announcements that we are looking forward to.

Among the cloud computing panels and developer conferences, Microsoft and Nadella will most likely include briefings on two upcoming Microsoft products: the Microsoft HoloLens and the Microsoft Lumia 840, about which we’ve talked about in a previous post. Insiders are saying that Windows 10 for Phones will be demonstrated to developers on a brand new handset that is in the works from Microsoft, supposedly the Lumia 840, but that might be too early, in our opinion. We’re most excited by Microsoft HoloLens as the company has made it pretty clear that the augmented reality gadget will be revolutionary.

Although we’re curious about HoloLens and the Lumia 840, Microsoft will be focusing on Windows 10 and what it has to offer for developers and users at the same time. With Windows 10, developers will be able to create a single application that will work on all of the devices that run Windows 10, which makes their work much easier and much more widespread. An app that a developer will create for Windows 10 will run on a PC, laptop, tablet, TV, smartphone, console and most likely on the HoloLens, too, which sounds almost too good to be true. Developers are already pretty excited about the prospect of developing for Windows 10 on all platforms, without having to work on different versions of their application.

The Microsoft Build conference this year is getting much more attention than it did last year, and that’s because of Windows 10 and the positive feedback that users and insiders gave after the first few Technical Previews that they’ve tested. Since Windows 10 Technical Previews are already available on a wide range of devices, including smartphones, it is crucial for Microsoft to bring developers into the new ecosystem and convince people that the free Windows 10 of the year will be worth their while.

Seeing as we’re almost in May, some voices in the industry are saying that the Microsoft Lumia 940 will actually make an appearance at the Microsoft 2015 Build Developer conference, although a launch for the phone is unlikely. That’s because Microsoft had made it clear that Windows 10 for Phones would be launched in conjunction with a flagship, and that’s most likely the upcoming Lumia 940. But who knows, maybe we’re in for a surprise we can’t even fathom right now. Stay tuned for more info about the Microsoft Build conference as well will be reporting on what the company talked about during these few days.
