Resident Evil 2 may get an HD remake if enough people ask for it, according to a Facebook post from Capcom. The company wants people to respond to their post on Facebook to let them know if there is enough interest out there for an HD remake of Resident Evil 2. At the time of writing, there are more than 22,000 likes on the post and more than 10,000 comments, almost all of which seem to be strongly in favour of seeing not just a Resident Evil 2 remake, but a remake of the whole original series.
“Hello Resident Evil fans! This is Capcom R&D Division 1!” the post reads. “First off, we would like to express our deepest appreciation to all Resident Evil fans, for your passion, enthusiasm and continued support for the Resident Evil brand. Enthusiasm for a Resident Evil 2 Remake is something we’ve been hearing from you over the years, and has drawn some recent attention in the media. However, as the team owns the RE brand, we’re not certain how we feel about this approach, and would like to ask your honest and frank opinion about the “Resident Evil 2 Remake” and what the brand identity is supposed to be about?”
It seems that Capcom is thinking of this remake in the same vein as the remake of the first game, which was released back in 2002 as a Gamecube exclusive. Despite receiving excellent reviews, however, it didn’t sell as well as Capcom had hoped. In 2008, it was ported to the Wii with a new control system. Then in early 2015, it was given an HD remake for the Xbox 360, Xbox One, Playstation 3, Playstation 4, and PC. The HD remake was greeted positively by fans and sold well. Those solid sales figures are likely what’s led to the team considering remaking the next game in the series.
